The 48th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Camp Washburn in Milwaukee in February-March 1865, just a few weeks before the war ended. It left the state for St. Louis, Missouri, on March 22 and then moved on to Kansas between April 1-13.

Various companies were assigned to provost and guard duty across Kansas. Companies B, D, F, and I moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where they mustered out on February 19, 1866. The remaining companies mustered out at Fort Leavenworth on March 24, 1866. The regiment lost 16 men during service, all from disease.
