Pomeroy Foundation Heritage Marker Program
Document the history of your community through this unique opportunity
Wisconsin Historical Society and Pomeroy Foundation Collaboration
The Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) is excited to announce an experiential learning opportunity available to educators in Wisconsin in collaboration with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
Beginning early 2025, the WHS and Pomeroy Foundation will work with a cohort of educators, supporting them and their students as they apply for a heritage marker grant. These grants are offered through the Pomeroy Foundation’s Hometown Heritage™ Marker Grant Program, which provides complete funding for the marker should the application be successful.
An application for a heritage marker benefits students by offering:
An introduction to civic literacy, public history, and power of place
The opportunity to conduct historical research grounded in primary source analysis
The experience of submitting a grant application, planning a commemoration, and leaving a visible impact on their community
After students identify a qualifying site and subject, the WHS and Pomeroy Foundation will offer support to students and educators as they gather the materials needed for an application, setting them up for success as they research, analyze, and create a project that educates the public, encourages pride of place, and promotes historic tourism while aligning with C3 Framework for Social Studies and Wisconsin Social Studies Standards. Through this place based historical project, students will leave a lasting imprint on their communities. Please note Hometown Heritage Markers are a separate program from Wisconsin State Historical Markers.
