MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of Lakeview Hospital in Milwaukee (Milwaukee County) on the State Register of Historic Places. Lakeview Hospital was one of Milwaukee’s earliest and most successful osteopathic hospitals. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presented the certificate to Carl Mueller and Jen Davel.

Three local osteopaths opened the hospital in 1944 with 17 beds in a former mansion on Prospect Avenue. In the early twentieth century, many were skeptical of osteopathy and practitioners in Wisconsin faced many legal challenges. In 1920, the Wisconsin Supreme Court allowed osteopaths and Lakeview Hospital to be licensed after it became a more widely accepted medical practice. The hospital grew to accommodate more patients over the next two decades as osteopathy was popularized in America.

The Lakeview Hospital building illustrates the early period of osteopathic medicine in Milwaukee. By the time it moved from this location, the hospital had expanded to 50 beds, delivered 7,000 babies and performed 15,000 operations. In 1965, Lakeview Hospital relocated to a modern, purpose-built hospital in suburban Wauwatosa.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
