BRILLION, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Gottlieb and Beata Stanelle Farmhouse in the Town of Brillion (Calumet County) on the National Register of Historic Places. The house was listed on December 27, 2023.

The Stanelle Farmhouse was completed in 1887 and is located about six miles northwest of the city of Brillion. It is an excellent and intact example of Italianate residential design, with a two-story main block and one-story side wing. The house has many characteristics of the Italianate style: a square cupola crowns the main block, beveled square posts support the front porches, sidelights and transom windows frame the front door, and scrolled brackets support the broad eaves. The house is finished with clapboards or composition wood siding that replicates the original.

Johann Gottlieb Stanelle and Johanna Beata (Franzke) Stanelle were born in Silesia, then part of Prussian Germany. They married in 1859, emigrated to the U.S. in 1862 and purchased 80 acres in Brillion Township in 1865. Gottlieb Stanelle was hailed as a “progressive” farmer who employed up-to-date scientific farming methods and shared what he learned to benefit his neighbors. The Stanelles had a successful and prosperous farm, as attested by their high-style Italianate house. The property remains in the Stanelle family today.
