Modern Jungles Education Materials
Education materials for grades 6-12 for use with the book "Modern Jungles" by Pao Lor
After a difficult and perilous journey that neither of his parents survived, five-year-old Pao Lor reached the safety of Thailand, but the young refugee boy's challenges were only just beginning. Now in Modern Jungles, Pao Lor shares his inspiring coming-of-age tale about perseverance, grit, and hope. Included are discussion questions for use by book clubs, in classrooms, or around the dinner table.
Designed for secondary classrooms grades 6-12 and co-created with the author, the Modern Jungles education materials will deepen your students' appreciation for and understanding of the Hmong immigration experience. Built on the inquiry framework of "Thinking Like A Historian," these materials push students to engage with the text by relating young Pao Lor's experiences to their own lives, exploring not just the differences of immigrant and refugee cultures but the commonalities we all share as human beings.
