Madison, Wis. – The Wisconsin Historical Museum will open its doors to the public for general admission beginning on June 3, 2021. Visitors can explore the museum Thursday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

“We are thrilled to welcome guests back to the museum this summer” said Mike Hollander, deputy director of the Wisconsin Historical Museum. “History lovers have many opportunities to engage with us in the coming months, whether they are exploring one of our exhibits at the museum, joining us for a walking tour around Madison, or learning about history with their kids using one of our virtual summer camps.”

Guests will have an opportunity to view two temporary, special exhibits on display at the museum this summer. “Hmong in Wisconsin” explores the stories and culture of the Hmong population who live in communities across the state. “We Stand on Their Shoulders,” which focuses on the histories of women and voting in Wisconsin, celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment and recognizes important women in this state and around the nation.

A variety of walking tours will be offered throughout the summer and fall months. These special experiences transport participants through history by diving into fascinating aspects of Madison’s storied past. Our newest walking tour, “Madison’s Tales of Infamy, Scandals, and Mystery Walking Tour,” takes guests through Madison’s criminal past with stories of bootleggers, illegal gambling operations, and notorious murder cases.

Summer camps are also back this year in a new virtual format. Parents and caretakers of kids entering grades 1-5 can choose from three different virtual summer camp experiences. “Wonderful Wisconsin Animals” is all about the critters, big and small, who live in the region. “Wisconsin World Adventurers” immerses kids in diverse cultures through music, storytelling, and art, and “Wisconsin Idea” explores revolutionary inventions and technologies created by people right here in Wisconsin.

When the days turn chilly, families are invited to join us for “Science on the Square” which will take place on October 22. This free event is an evening packed with science demonstrations and hands-on activities for all ages. The Wisconsin Historical Museum will also ring in the winter holidays with our annual Ever Gleaming celebration beginning in November.

The Wisconsin Historical Society is committed to prioritizing the health and safety of our guests, members, and staff.
