Sheridan Apartment Building Listed in the State Register of Historic Places

Milwaukee, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Sheridan Apartment Building (Milwaukee, Milwaukee County) on the State Register of Historic Places on August 14, 2020.

The Sheridan Apartment Building, built in 1927, is what is known as an elevator apartment building, constructed at the peak of popularity and strongly evocative of high-end apartment living in the early twentieth century in Milwaukee. The design by architects Backes & Uthes incorporated many of the in-demand features for apartments of the era, including an elevator, elegant lobby, spacious and light-filled apartments with built in storage, wood trim and floors, electricity, radiant heat, and modern kitchen amenities including refrigeration.

Parcel boxes, large storage rooms and a laundry room in the basement, rounded out the amenities in the building.  The Mediterranean Revival style is evident on the exterior with its towers, terra cotta ornament, and copper finishes, and is reflected on the interior showcasing features such as decorative tile, railings of wrought iron, textured plaster, and wood and leaded glass doors.  This building, beautiful and highly intact, evokes this historic period of city living and helps tell the story of the evolution of residential life in Milwaukee.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
