Siebken’s Resort Listed in the State Register of Historic Places

Elkhart Lake, WI. - The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Siebken’s Resort (Elkhart Lake, Sheboygan County) on the State Register of Historic Places on August 14, 2020.

Siebken’s Resort, constructed by the shores of Elkhart Lake, has been a popular vacation destination since the mid-nineteenth century, the lake drawing visitors for fishing, swimming, boating, hunting, and entertainment.  Herman Siebken purchased the resort property in 1916, which already had multiple buildings constructed between 1882 and 1888, and proceeded to expand the resort with additional lodging, a restaurant, and entertainment catering to summer guests.  Siebken’s Resort evolved over the next nine decades to suit the tastes of vacationers, having a popular restaurant, bar, live entertainment and was a focal point for car racing during the 1950s.  The resort, owned by members of the Siebken family until 2019, is a rare survivor from the historic period; its charming buildings of Italianate, Greek Revival, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles reflect the long resort history of Elkhart Lake.   The resort continues in operation today, welcoming guests to relax and play by the waters of the lake.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
