Milwaukee Public Schools Survey
The State Historic Preservation Office funded this 2019 survey conducted by University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cultural Resources Management to document historic schools in the City of Milwaukee. The survey identified 179 individual resources of architectural and historical interest. The majority of the surveyed resources are still in use as schools, although several have been converted to other uses or are currently vacant. The purpose was to identify historic places that are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and therefore eligible for federal and state historic preservation tax credits.
The availability of these financial incentives makes these resources attractive for reinvestment and rehabilitation for new uses.
The activity that is the subject of this report has been financed in part with Federal Funds from the
National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, and administered by the Wisconsin Historical
Society. However, the contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the Department of the Interior or the Wisconsin Historical Society.
