Old World Wisconsin Partners with Milwaukee School of Engineering on STEM Project

Eagle, Wis. – Old World Wisconsin and the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) have partnered on a project to develop interactive programming that will integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning and history.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to take the lead and develop an interactive exhibit about the use of wind power and water pump technology through the lens of history,” said Dr. Mohammad Mahinfalah, professor at Milwaukee School of Engineering. “Old World Wisconsin will then be able to put those exhibits to real use as part of their New Arrivals campaign.”

During the 2017-18 academic school year, two student groups will be working on developing interactive exhibits for Old World Wisconsin. The first group will focus on designing an interactive exhibit that demonstrates how the combination of wind engine design and water pump technology enabled early Wisconsin farmers to extract water from a well. The second group will focus on the design of an outdoor “maker space” where guests can build and test their own wind engines.

“I am very impressed with the ingenuity and creativity of the MSOE student teams and look forward to sharing their work with the 18,000 school students who visit Old World Wisconsin each year,” said Dan Freas, site director at Old World Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, from 5:30-7:00 pm there will be a reception at MSOE’s Alumni Partnership Center where MSOE partners and supporters will be introduced to the Old World Wisconsin. Students will also present their project concepts and initial designs.

Both of the student design groups will showcase their prototypes during Mechanical Engineering Department Senior Design Show on May 25 from 12:00-3:00 pm at CC Building on the campus of MSOE.
