Herman and Lillian Greiling House Placed on the State Register of Historic Places

Allouez, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society placed the Herman and Lillian Greiling House (Allouez, Brown County) on the State Register of Historic Places on February 16, 2018.

The Greiling House is an excellent example of the Mediterranean Revival style, designed by prominent Green Bay architects Foeller and Schober, and is one of the finest examples of the style in the community.  Constructed in 1920, the house features characteristic Mediterranean Revival elements including brick masonry construction, a large porch, massive masonry columns, stone accents and belt-coursing, wood double-hung windows, clay tile roof, decorative brackets, balconies, wood interior details, and other Mediterranean style details.  This home is one of the largest and most prominent residential projects designed by Foeller and Schober.

Herman Greiling was a prominent Green Bay businessman, entrepreneur, engineer, and civic leader during the early twentieth century.  He established the Marine Construction Company in 1896 with his brother Charles, specializing in marine architecture such as bridges, retaining walls, ship machinery, and docks as a major employer all over the Midwest.  The brothers operated the company for over forty years.  Herman co-founded the Hartmann-Greiling Machine and Boiler Works in 1911 manufacturing boat machinery and boilers.  He served as the first president of the Allouez Water Commission in 1924 and was an active booster of village services.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
