Origin of the Williamstown Township, Wisconsin
"The township of Williamstown, in which Mayville is located, received its first settlers in 1845 when Alvin and William Foster and Chester May arrived to select a site for their mills and begin work on the sawmill and dam. The area apparently received its name from one of its first settlers, William Foster."
