Chief of the Sauk and Fox; born about 1787 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, and died March 15, 1842, in Iowa; second in authority to Keokuk; in 1829 he moved the two nations to the west side of the Mississippi River rather than face overwhelming military force from the U.S.
