Stewart, Alva 1821 - 1889 | Wisconsin Historical Society
lawyer, politician, judge, b. Morrisville, Madison County, N.Y. He studied law in New York, and in 1847 moved to Wisconsin, settling at Fort Atkinson where he was admitted to the bar and set up a law practice. Stewart was active in local politics, and served as state assemblyman (1850) and state senator (1852-1853). In 1853 he moved to Portage, where he engaged in business for a few years, but in 1855 resumed his law practice. In Feb., 1865, he was appointed by Governor James T. Lewis (q.v.) as circuit judge of the 9th judicial circuit to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harlow S. Orton (q.v.). Stewart was subsequently elected to the position, successively re-elected, and served from Feb., 1865, until his death. J. R. Berryman, ed., Bench and Bar of Wis.
