librarian, b. Janesville. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B.A., 1890), and while still a student at the University, was appointed assistant librarian. In 1890 he was made a fellow and librarian, and in 1891 became the first head librarian of the Univ. of Wisconsin. Smith served in this capacity until his retirement in 1937, and during his administration the library grew from a staff of one to a staff of 35 and the library increased its holdings from 18,000 to 475,000 volumes.
