Schlesinger, Ferdinand 1851 - 1921 | Wisconsin Historical Society
businessman, financier, b. Prussia. He migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin in 1871, taught school briefly at Kilbourn, but soon moved to Milwaukee. From 1878 to 1887 he manufactured farm machinery in Milwaukee, and subsequently became a prominent figure in the development of the iron-ore deposits of Upper Michigan. He served in executive capacities with several mining companies, and in 1908 purchased and reorganized the Northwestern Iron Co. of Mayville, 'Wis. He was president of this firm (1908-1916), and also founded the Milwaukee Coke and Gas Co. (1902), was its president (1902-1918), and chairman of the board of directors from 1918 until his death. He was also connected with other large Milwaukee business enterprises, and was a liberal benefactor of Milwaukee Children's Hospital. W. G. Bruce, ed., Hist. of Milwaukee (3 vols., Chicago, 1922); J.
