lawyer, judge, b. Brasher, N.Y. He moved with his parents to Wisconsin in 1857, settling in Lake Geneva. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (LL.B., 1880), and from 1880 to 1905 practiced law in Madison. In 1905 he was appointed federal judge for the western district of Wisconsin, and served in this capacity until his death. He was also a faculty member of the Univ. of Wisconsin Law School (1884-1887), and a member of the state board of bar examiners (1893-1900). His son, JOHN BELL SANBORN, b. Elkhorn, graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (B.A., 1896; LL.B., 1897; Ph.D., 1899). He taught American history for one year at Ohio State Univ., and from 1902 until his death practiced law in Madison. He was a lecturer at the Univ. of Wisconsin Law School (1908-1933), a member of the Wisconsin board of bar examiners (1911-1913), and one of the Wisconsin commissioners on uniform state laws (1917-1924).
