French-Canadian naval officer, Governor of Louisiana and Governor General of New France. Born in Canada, he was the son of Philippe de Rigaud de Vaudreuil an earlier Governor of New France (Canada). After a term as Governor of Louisiana (1742-1753), he was appointed Governor of New France (Canada)in 1755 at the start of the French and Indian War. He returned to France after the capitulation of Montreal of 1760, being the last French royal representative in Canada.
