Historical Essay
Platteville
Origin of Platteville, Wisconsin
In the fall of 1827 it was called Platte River; in the spring of 1828 the name was changed to Lebanon, and again in a few months to Platteville. It has been supposed that the place was named for Alonzo Platt, a prominent citizen who came to the settlement in 1828, but this is doubtful as Platte River was so named before his arrival.
