Episcopal clergyman, bishop, b. Baltimore, Md. He graduated from Dartmouth College (1869) and Virginia Theological Seminary (1871), and was ordained in the Episcopal priesthood in 1872. From 1872 to 1891 he served parishes in New Hampshire, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. In 1891 he was elected Bishop of the Milwaukee diocese and served in this capacity until his death. As bishop, he was instrumental in promoting the rise of Nashotah House to national prominence as an Episcopalian seminary, and also urged the creation of a La Crosse and a Madison diocese. His business-like administration of church affairs aided greatly in seeing the Milwaukee diocese through the financial panic of 1893. Who's Who in Amer., 3 (1903); J. G. Gregory, Hist. of Milwaukee (4 vols., Chicago, 1931); Milwaukee Sentinel, Oct. 30, 1906.
