Moore, Benjamin Franklin 1819 - 1904 | Wisconsin Historical Society

businessman, b. Clinton, Maine. He worked at various jobs in the East, moved to Wisconsin in 1841, and from 1841 to 1846 operated a store at Taycheedah near Fond du Lac. In 1843 he built one of the first sawmills on the Wolf River at the outlet of Shawano Lake. In 1853 he became interested in steamboat prospects on Lake Winnebago, and was operating a fleet of seven lake boats by 1857, when he sold his interest in the operation. During the 1860's he engaged in various business enterprises in Fond du Lac, and in 1874 purchased an interest in the La Belle Wagon Works. He became sole owner the same year, and in 1879 reorganized the business as a stock company. He was president of this firm (1879-1887), and in 1887 retired from active business pursuits.
