Dictionary of Wisconsin History.

Name given to pioneer settlement on Beef River, by Elihu B. Gifford, who came to that place in 1856. Name chosen from reading an account of battle at Mondovi, Italy in which Sardinian forces were defeated by Napoleon on April 22, 1796. Name "Mondovi" fourth from top list on inside Arch of Triumph. Gifford in 1878 gave name to settlement in state of Washington.
