Mills, Charles Henry 1873 - 1937 | Wisconsin Historical Society
musician, professor, music school director, b. Nottingham, England. He attended the Guildhall School of Music in London, toured the U.S. as concert pianist (1892-1893), and in 1894 returned to England. From 1894 to 1907 he was organist or conductor for various musical groups in England, Scotland, and Wales. He graduated from the Univ. of Edinburgh (Mus.B., 1904). Returning to the U.S. in 1907 he was professor of the history and theory of music at Syracuse Univ. (1907-1908), and from 1908 to 1914 was director of the school of music at the Univ. of Illinois. In 1911 he received his Mus.D. degree from McGill Univ., Montreal, Canada. In 1914 he came to the Univ. of Wisconsin as director of the school of music, and served in this capacity until his death. Under his leadership a four-year course and graduate training in music was instituted. He also inaugurated the summer music school, was co-author of Syllabus of Music History (1923), and wrote several musical compositions. Who's Who in Amer., 19 (1936); Madison Wis.
