Merrill, Sherburn Sanborn 1818 - 1885
railroad manager, b. Alexandria, N.H. He moved to Milwaukee in 1850 where he became closely associated with the physical development of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railway system and three of its predecessor lines. He began his career in 1850 as a foreman in the construction department of the Milwaukee and Mississippi R.R., and became successively conductor, paymaster, and assistant superintendent (1853-1857) under Edward H. Brodhead (q.v.). He was superintendent of the Milwaukee and Watertown R.R. (1857-1862), the La Crosse and Milwaukee R.R.
