Maurer, Irving 1879 - 1942 | Wisconsin Historical Society
Congregational clergyman, college president, b. Garnavillo, Iowa. He graduated from Beloit College (B.A., 1904) and Yale Divinity School (D.D., 1909). Before returning to Wisconsin, he held pastorates in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio. In 1924 he was appointed president of Beloit College, and served in this capacity until his death. During Maurer's administration, the college plant was greatly expanded, the student body was increased, and the curriculum was broadened. He was a noted pulpit orator, and was the author of Prayers of College Life (1912) and My Christian Faith (1923), and also wrote numerous articles for educational and religious journals.
