dentist, physician, b. Gartz-on-the-Oder, Pomerania, Germany. He migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin with his parents in 1853, settling in Saukville. In 1873 he moved to Milwaukee where he studied dentistry in a local office. He practiced dentistry in Milwaukee from 1873 to 1884, and again, after graduating from the Univ. of Pennsylvania (D.D.S., 1886; M.D., 1887), from 1887 until his death. He was an organizer of the Milwaukee Medical College (1894), served as first dean of the dental department (1894-1898), and professor of oral surgery (1894-1907). He was professor of oral surgery at Marquette Univ. (1907-1915), was a member of the first board of dental examiners (1885-1894), and held memberships in numerous professional organizations. A. J.
