Madeline Island
Origin of Madeline Island, Wisconsin
"Moningwanekaning," place where there are many lapwings (birds of the woodpecker species). This is the largest of the Apostle Islands, about 13 miles long and from 2 to 3 miles wide. It was first settled by the Chippewa Indians, 1500 A.D.
