POLYGONAL TOWER W/ONION ROOF AND ROUND ARCHED WINDOWS ON CNR, WOOD SHINGLES IN GABLES, WRAP AROUND PORCH W/GROUPED COLUMNS AND SPINDLED RAILING. JONES WAS BORN IN 1863 IN A LARGE WELSH SETTLEMENT NEAR COLUMBUS. HE WORKED ON THE FAMILY FARM UNTIL 1888, WHEN HE TOOK A JOB AS A CLERK IN JOHN WILLIAMS' DRUG STORE. JONES AND HIS UNCLE BUILT THE JONES BLOCK AT 125/127 W. JAMES IN 1896. SOME YEARS LATER, JONES BOUGHT THE CORNER DRUG STORE AT 103 N. LUDINGTON FROM JOHN WILLIAMS. JONES STAYED IN BUSINESS UNTIL 1945. Built in 1900 for local druggist John A. Jones, this beautifully restored Queen Anne style house is one of the finest examples in Columbus. Although the newspaper citation refers to "the architects plans," the name of the designer is not yet known. "The irregular massing of this house, complete with three-story tower and wrap-around porch, comes from the Queen Anne Style. However, its classically-derived details proclaims the house to be a fine example of the Free Classic style. The grouped columns , the repeated use of dentils and cornices, the Palladian-form window in the gable to the right of the tower and the broken pediment over the paired windows in the gable to the left, are all classically-inspired. Engaged columns are used to define the edges of the tower; decorative swags ornament the some of the window hoods. John A. Jones was born in 1863 in a large, closeknit Welsh settlement near Columbus. He worked on the family farm until he was 25, when he took a job as clerk in the drug store of John Williams. Jones and his uncle built the Jones Block at 125/127 W. James in 1896. Some years later Jones purchased the Corner Drug store from John Williams. He continued in business until 1945." Columbus Historic Architecture Tours, undated. |
