Call of the Open Road
Front and back cover of the Call of the Open Road, an annual publication of the Milwaukee Journal Tour Department based on its regular columns of motoring information. The publication and the travel services of the Journal were addressed not only to Wisconsin motorists, but particularly to out of state tourists for whom the automobile and the state's "unsurpassed" highway system was making Wisconsin's "summer playland" more accessible. "Touring is a delight, and the automobile is the most popular means of transportation," the guide states. In addition to guides and free information provided to motorists, the Journal also encouraged the development of a good highway system by competition among the patrolmen who maintained the state's unpaved roads. |
