Art of the Draw: Advertising Posters
from the McCormick-International Harvester Collection
ICONOGRAPHY POSTER
Industrial Might
n the industrial economy of the
late 19th century, the factory replaced the
mythical goddess figure as the icon of material
abundance. The bird's-eye view of a factory with
billowing smokestacks became a popular symbol of
prosperity and appeared on catalogs, trade cards,
letterhead, advertisements, and posters. This poster
reinforces its message of productivity by showing the
factory going full blast at midnight.
