Author Bio

Nancy Oestreich Lurie devoted her life to understanding the lives and history of Native peoples. She was an anthropologist, a professor, and curator of anthropology at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Among ter many publications were Mountain Wolf Woman and Women and the Invention of American Anthropology. Lurie received numerous awards, including the Anisfield-Wolf Award, sponsored by the Saturday Review; the American Anthropological Association's Franz Boas Award for Exemplary Service to Anthropology; and the Wisconsin Historical Society's William B. Hesseltine Award.
