Wild rice—manoomin—has been a central part of the diet and culture of the Ojibwe peoples for many, many centuries. This fun and engaging activity book describes the traditional practices of wild rice collection and processing by Ojibwe communities. It includes an introduction to the wild rice plant, the tools used in wild ricing, ceremonial offerings for the rice, and all the steps involved in harvesting, gathering, and using wild rice. The wild rice secret code activity, manoomin maze, and crossword puzzles are just a few fun ways young readers will engage with this fascinating cultural and culinary tradition.

The Ojibwe Traditions Coloring and Activity Book Series offers children and their families the opportunity to learn about Ojibwe lifeways and teachings in an engaging and accessible manner. Included in each coloring book are word scrambles, mazes, and other activities to help children and their families engage more deeply with the information and have fun at the same time. While younger children (3+) can enjoy simply coloring the pages, older children (6+) can also use the stories and glossaries to start learning more about the language and traditions of the Ojibwe people.

Cassie Brown is a proud member of the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwe Community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She is a graduate of Northland College with a B.S. double major in Outdoor Education and Native American Studies.
