Steps in the SHPO Review Process for Federal Projects

Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) requires federal agencies to consult with the public, as well as state and tribal preservation offices regarding federal actions that may affect a historic place. A federal action could be a project managed by the federal agency or a project that is receiving an agency's funding or approval. The Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office was established by the NHPA to carry out historic preservation programs in the state. Federal undertakings in Wisconsin require the agency to consult with the SHPO to consider the effects of federal projects on Wisconsin historic places.

Pre-submittal Federal Agency Requirements

Please review each of the following criteria to determine whether to submit materials to our office:

  1. Is your project an undertaking with the potential to affect historic properties?

  2. Does your project affect properties within the reservation boundaries of a Native American Nation with a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer?

  3. Are you a federal agency representative or formal delegate of a federal agency?

Review Process and Submittal Guidelines

The Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office accepts digital submissions for federal projects through the Wisconsin Historic Preservation Database. Agencies are encouraged to create an account with the Wisconsin Historic Preservation Database to submit your Section 106 review materials online. Please contact us for instructions. 

For more information about the Section 106 process, we recommend the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
