Tribal Historic Preservation Officers
About Tribal Historic Preservation Officers
The National Historic Preservation Act created Tribal Historic Preservation Officers to coordinate historic preservation programs on Tribal Lands. Section 106 of the NHPA requires review of federal projects by State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO) and/or Tribal Historic Preservation Officers depending on the location of the project. There are currently ten federally recognized tribes in Wisconsin that have established a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. Learn when you need to submit federal project materials to a THPO for Section 106 review and the contact information for Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.
- For more information about Tribal Historic Preservation Officers, please see the National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.
- For more information about Section 106 review and compliance, please see the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
When to Submit Project Materials to the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO)
Project is located completely with the reservation boundaries of a Native American Nation or Tribe that has formal THPO status:
-
You must submit the project materials directly to the THPO for the Section 106 review. The Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) does not have review or other consultation authority on tribal land.
Project is located within reservation boundaries of a Native American Nation or Tribe and also outside the reservation boundaries:
-
You must submit project materials to both the THPO and the SHPO for review.
