Description:
The Charles Wittenberg House is located at 424 East Capitol Drive in Hartland's East Capitol Drive Historic District. The square two-story Spanish Colonial Revival House was built for Wittenberg in 1926. (See Bib. Ref. A). The foundation is concrete, the first story is stone veneered, and the upper story is stucco. Red ceramic tile covers the hipped roof. Piercing the red tile eave of the one-story section on the main facade is a wide, orange brick chimney with stone quoins. Above, the chimney narows, a niche appears, and twin chimney pots extend through a tiny gabled chimney roof. There is a one-story entrance porch with a gabled red tile roof on the southeast corner of the house, sheltering a round-arched door with quoined architrave. Hipped red tile roofed sections, each one story in height, appear on the west and rear facades, and the owners have recently expanded the house to the rear. Northeast of the house is a detached matching garage with a hipped red tile roof. The interior is in the process of being renovated. The residence was owned in May of 1985 by Frank and Marian Bauer.
Architectural/Engineering Significance:
The Charles Wittenberg House, constructed in 1926, is a contributing structure in the East Capitol Drive Historic Distict, and is individually significant. One of three Sapnish Colonial Revival houses in the village, the Wittenberg House is by far the most elaborate. The combination of an architectural style indigenous to the southeastern and southwestern United States with stone and brick native to southeastern Wisconsin lends the Wittenberg House a distinctive and striking appearance. Its architectural integrity is excellent.
Historical Background:
Chalres Wittenberg operated a livery business in Hartland from approximately 1900 to 1920. (See Bib. Ref. A).
Historical Significance:
Based on the information available about this building, as well as Mr. Wittenberg, this house is not presently deemed historically significant.
