Property Features
The Joseph Counsell House is situated at 628 East Capitol Drive in Heartland's East Capitol Drive Historic District. (See Bib. Ref. A). This one-and-one-half-story cross gabled structure was built sometime after 1887 but before 1891 (see Abstract), and is set on a stone foundation. A one-story porch marks the main entrance on the west end of the south facade. The residence features a clapboard exterior and an asphalt shingled multi-gable roof.
The interior has suffered little altaration since the Gilbert family took possession of the house in 1942. The original woodwork, including hardwood floors, have been retained. A board and batten carrigage house stands to the rear of the house. In May of 1985, the residence was owned by the Gilbert Estate, care of Jeanette Gilbert.
Architectural/Engineering Significance:
The Counsell House is a contributing structure in the District, but is not individually architecturally significant. It does represent late-Nineteenth Century residential architecture in Hartland. The Counsell House provides the best example of an intact residence and carriage house complex, both structures exhibiting excellent integrity.
