This building has some historical interest as the long-time location of the Pohlman shoe store, one of the small shoe stores in the community that maintained one location for a fairly long period of time. It has historical significance, though, as part of the W.F. Brandt and Son store under National Register criterion A. The Brandt store, by the time it took over this part of the building, was a highly successful and large department store. The building still maintains its historical connection with the original Brandt store in that it is part of the business now occupying the old Brandt store.
The building also contributes to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historic District because it has contained retail businesses in it since its date of construction.
A three-bay, two-story cream brick commercial building, the C. Reubhousen building was constructed in 1868 to house his store. Topped by a molded brick cornice ornamented by a row of dentils and vertically divided by applied brick pilasters, the Reubhousen building is further ornamented by projecting round arched brick window hoods that are placed over four over four lights.
Incorporated into the adjacent property at 301-303 Main St. during the recent 1985 remodeling project, the former Reubhousen building's storefront has been remodeled and replaced with large plate glass windows. The exterior surface has been sandblasted.
The C. Reubhousen building is commercial vernacular building characterized by a wide brick cornice and Italianate eyebrow window heads. Although this building is not architecturally significant, the Reubhousen building contributes to the historic architectural character of the proposed Main Street Historic District.
