Additional Comments
CONSTRUCTED IN 1854 (SEE BIB. REF. A), THIS THREE STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE. THE STRUCTURE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM AND A SHINGLED, GABLE AND HIP ROOF. OLD WINDOW FRAMES WITH TWO-OVER-TWO LIGHTS DISTINGUISH THE OPENIGNS ON THE SECOND AND THIRD STORIES OF THE FACADE. THE STOREFRONT ON THE FIRST STORY HAS UNDERGONE SEVERE ALTERATIONS. THE BUILDING IS IN OVERALL GOOD CONDITION. THE NAMES HISTORICALLY GIVEN TO THIS BUILDING ARE INDICATIVE OF THE COMMERCIAL VITALITY OF THE BUILDING WHICH SPANNED FROM 1854 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THESE NAMES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: THOMAS & COMPANY BUILDING (SEE BIB. A); THOMAS BLOCK; GUNDRY BLOCK; THOMAS & GRUNDY BLOCK (SEE BIB. REF. B); BOSTWICK DRY GOODS CO. (SEE BIB. REF. C); WHEELER GROCERY AND PROVISIONS; CHAPMAN BROS. & CHOATE DRY GOODS; AND THE MINERAL POINT TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER OFFICE (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE DRY GOODS STORE CONDUCTED BUSINESS AT THIS SITE FROM 1859 TO 1929. (SEE BIB. REF. A, D). THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Built by "Messrs. Thomas & Co.," according to the Mineral Point Tribune. One of the "Messrs." was probably Richard Thomas, as he owned this lot and bulit the building to the east a few years later. The other "Messr." may have been his father, Sampson Thomas, who was also a stone mason. The "& Co." may have been Richard's partner, James Carbis. Carbis & Thomas built several stone buldings in Mineral Point including the Gundry house at Orchard Lawn and the houses that later became Pendarvis and Trelawny. Carbis and the Thomases were from Conrwall. Other businesses at this location were: S. Adler & Co.; Joseph Gundry; Samuel Crawford, attorney; Richard & Montgomery Smith; the Mineral Point Tribune newspaper office; Chapman Bros & Choate; Wheeler Grocery and Provisions; Wheeler & Lathrop, groceries; Teasdale & Wallis; Prater & Jacka; M. W. Prater, dry goods; Samuel Francis, furniture; J.T. Hendra; H.H. Chandler; Ross Graves, Jewelry; a pizza restaurant; and an arcade and bar." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press.
