Additional Comments
2025; The non-denominational Oakwood Cemetery’s irregular-shaped lot spans approximately 54 acres per city parcel data and bottlenecks at the monumental gateway at the south. The paved roads crisscross the grounds in a lax gridwork pattern, interspersed by connecting curves. The boundaries extend rearwards with land reserved at the east for future interments. The landscape includes mature tree lines and retaining walls at elevation changes. The oldest section of cemetery began parallel to the dates of earliest settlement, with the earliest legible gravestones dating to 1849. The oldest section appears to be concentrated near the center of the parcel. It is important to note that plots are still being sold, and markers range from historic to current day. To accommodate newer burials, surrounding property was acquired by the city over several decades to expand the boundaries of the cemetery burial plots. Due to modern and continuous interment, the cemetery does not contain period funerary sculptures or reflect its original designed landscape.
