Additional Comments
2025; The main entrance to Oakwood Cemetery is landmarked by this circa 1925 Romanesque Revival-style entry gateway at the south. The monumental, free-standing three-arch gate rests on a stone foundation and is centered on a large Roman arch flanked by a smaller arch on either side. Architectural ornamentation is emphasized by the scale and symmetry present in the rough-cut granite block construction and the three decorative ironwork gates. The name “OAKWOOD” is incised within the curvature of the main arch’s voussoir. The tail ends of its curved entablature terminate in urn finials. The flat towers that host the smaller arches sit at a lower height than the main arch. The arches are framed by piers on either side and house their own in-swinging gates. Ellipsoids of brick pavers connect the smaller flanking arches to the adjacent granite block pillars. The entry gateway was fully restored by the City of Berlin in 1987. Associated with 6 other AHI entries within Oakwood Cemetery: #48728 gate fence #48729 garage #48730 Griffith Memorial Chapel #48731 stone retaining wall #48732 cemetery #48733 park pavilion
