AS OF 8/13/1985 DEMOLITION WAS LIKELY BUT AS OF 1993 IT IS TO BE RESTORED AS A RESTAURANT AND APARTMENTS. A BRIEF TWO AND A HALF STORY TERPLATED ROOFED COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE WITH PARAPETED GABLE ENDS, "EYE BROW" WINDOWS, WOODEN LINTELS, NINE OVER SIX WINDOWS IN THE UPPER STORY AND A WOODEN STORE FRONT WITH A DOUBLE TRANSOM WINDOW OVER THE ENTRANCE DOOR ARE FEATURES OF THIS OLD COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE. A SHED ROOF EXTENSION IS AT THE REAR. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: A COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE FROM EARLY PLATTEVILLE, THE STRUCTURE IS ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE IT IS A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE EARLY COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURE AND BECAUSE IT HAS RETAINED ITS CHARACTER. IT IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY AS ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING EARLY COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES. ONE PREVIOUS OWNER OF THE BUILDING WAS A PERSON NAMED BAKER, WHO OPERATED A CONFECTIONARY, A HARDWARE AND GROCERY STORE IN 1891. BY 1884 THE BUILDING HOUSED A PLACE WHERE DRUGS WERE KEPT. "This Federal style building has been used primarily for retail since its construction in 1849 and is best remembered as the Huintington Wellers grocery store. This building stood in a state of disrepair and was condemned before being purchased in 1985 by a group of concerned citizens who sold it to the Wisconsin Lead Region Trust in 1990 when it was completely restoried.
