Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Brigadier General Bradley Tyler Johnson. When the war broke out, he formed a company at his own expense for the service of the Confederacy. Johnson served as the company's captain. In June 1861 he was made a major, in July he was promoted to Lieutenant General, and in March 1862 he was made a colonel. His service in the Seven Days Battles around Richmond, Virginia rapidly depleted his force's numbers, forcing them to be mustered out of service in August 1862. In June 1864 Johnson was commissioned as a Brigadier General of Cavalry. In December 1864 he was reassigned to post duty at Salisbury, North Carolina, supervising Union prisoners of war.
