Three-quarter length carte-de-visite portrait of Walter Quintin Gresham with the rank of Brigadier General. At the start of the war he was initially denied an officer's commission by the governor of Indiana. Soon after this, he raised his own company, which elected him as their captain. By March 1861, he had become the Lieutenant Colonel of the 38th Indiana Volunteers, and that year he was promoted to the rank of colonel. In 1862 he participated in the Vicksburg Campaign and was promoted to Brigadier General. In spring 1864 he took part in General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, where he was shot in the knee by a sharpshooter, serving the rest of the war out of active service. In March 1865 he received a brevet promotion to Major General because of his efforts in Atlanta.
