Task Force Headquarters Mess

Image

Officers sit down together for a meal at the Task Force Headquarters Mess in the military camp at Saidor, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). One soldier is walking through the rutted mud in the foreground. The jungle is in the background. Robert Doyle wrote a caption for this image although it was not published: "The Elite of the Saidor task force dine here. This is the headquarters officers' mess. They stand in the chow line with mess kits and carry their food to the rough pole tables. When it rains at mealtime the elite get rained on."
