The schooner Pride is located 250 feet north of the intersection of West Juniper Street and North Lancing Avenue in Sturgeon Bay, Door County, Wisconsin. It lies embedded in the silty bottom of Sturgeon Bay in eight feet of water. Although its hull is broken, most of the ship’s components are present on the site. Many features remain buried in the soft sediment and weeds of the bay. The masts and transom were not located during the survey and its deck machinery has been removed.

Pride was built by Master Carpenter Henry Dutton (H.D.) Root at Black River, Ohio, in 1866. The vessel operated in the Great Lakes lumber and other bulk cargo trades throughout its career. The Pride experienced groundings and had to be repaired multiple times; however, its ship lines remained the same throughout its service history. On 22 August 1898, the Pride was capsized by a tornado in Egg Harbor, killing the ship’s mate. The ship was righted and given to the salvors in payment for their services. It was then moved to Sturgeon Bay where it awaited repairs. In April 1900, efforts were made to remove water from the hull and move the vessel for repairs to commence, but the ship was ultimately abandoned. The vessel provides historians and archaeologists with the opportunity to study construction techniques of schooners used in the Great Lakes shipping and lumber trades. The site is lightly visited by snorkelers and divers. The Pride site has produced archaeological knowledge about early wooden schooner construction and has the potential to yield a wealth of information about early schooner construction on the Great Lakes.
