Pride Shipwreck Listed in the State Register of Historic Places

STURGEON BAY, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Pride shipwreck in the State Register of Historic Places on May 24, 2024. The remains of the schooner Pride rest 250 feet north of the intersection of West Juniper Street and North Lansing Avenue in Sturgeon Bay. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presented a certificate to Bob Jaeck.

Built at Black River, Ohio, in 1866, the schooner Pride operated in the Great Lakes lumber and bulk cargo trades throughout its career. Schooners were built for speed, maneuverability, and their ability to sail close to the wind. Now partially embedded in the lakebed in eight feet of water, the Pride retains excellent archaeological integrity with most of the vessel hull components present and protected by sediment of the bay.

On 22 August 1898, the Pride was capsized by a tornado in Egg Harbor, killing the ship’s mate. The schooner was righted and moved to Sturgeon Bay to await repairs. In April 1900, efforts were made to remove water from its hull and move the vessel to the shipyard for repairs, but the Pride was ultimately abandoned. 

State and federal laws protect this shipwreck. Divers may not remove artifacts or structure when visiting this site. Removing, defacing, displacing, or destroying artifacts or sites is a crime.
