Women Engaged in "Tractorette" Training

Dan Downey, International Harvester blockman from Philadelphia, teaches three women how to operate a Farmall M tractor and a McCormick-Deering harvester-thresher (combine). The women are members of the Red Cross Motor Corps from Paoli and W. Chester, PA. The women took part in a variety of jobs on Herbert Hill's angus farm. Pictured here are (L to R): Mary G. Baldwin, Mrs. P.F. Smith and Mrs. S.E. Smith. The women were taking part in International Harvester's "Tractorette" program. The company announced the program in 1942. It was intended to address the farm labor shortage created by U.S. war mobilization. The plan called for local dealers to offer free training for thousands of farm women and girls in the operation of tractors and other farm machinery.
