Esther Goubert of Santa Ana, California, takes the final field test of TracTracTor (crawler tractor) operation in the "Tractorette" program. The original caption reads: "Tractorette Esther Goubert of Santa Ana, California proves that she can take her Army brother's place on the Goubert Farm. Esther took her lessons seriously during Harvester Dealer August Eltiste's recent Tractorette Training Course and consequently will be a valuable aid to her father for the duration in growing Lima beans and Alfalfa on their 160 acre farm. She is shown here in her final field test at the controls of a TD-9 and Dyrr Offset Disk Harrow." International Harvester Company announced the "Tractorette" program in 1942. The plan was intended to address the farm labor shortage created by U.S. war mobilization. The plan called for local dealers to offer free training for thousands of farm women and girls in the operation of tractors and other farm machinery.
