1864 - (Civil War) Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia

The 5th Wisconsin Infantry fought in the Battle of Cedar Creek, also known as the Battle of Belle Grove, Virginia. This battle ended the final Confederate invasion of the North and helped re-elect President Abraham Lincoln.

1901 - Cornerstone Laid for Janesville City Hall

On this date the Grand Lodge of Masons laid the cornerstone for Janesville's first freestanding city hall. Built of sandstone in the Romanesque Revival style, the new building was 66- by 94-feet, had three stories and housed the police department, city jail, municipal court, administrative offices, city council chambers and an assembly hall. 1927 - Victor Berger Selected Chairman of the Socialist Party

On this date Wisconsin Congressman Victor Berger of Milwaukee succeeded Eugene Debs as chairman of the Socialist Party.

1948 - Composer Chester Biscardi Born

On this date contemporary composer Chester Biscardi was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He received an M.A. in Italian Literature and an M.M. in Musical Composition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Yale and served as chairman of the music department at Sarah Lawrence College. Chester Biscardi's music has been featured at the Gaudeamus Festival in Rotterdam, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in England, Music Today-Japan in Tokyo, the Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival, the North American New Music Festival in Buffalo, Piccolo Spoleto and the 21st Annual Bienal of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Biscardi has received the Prix de Rome, the Japan Foundation Fellowship, an Ives Scholarship from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
