Description

This second volume in the definitive history of Wisconsin picks up the story from Wisconsin becoming a state in 1848 and takes readers through the first generation of statehood. The quarter century begins with booming prosperity, the encouragement of railroads, and a political ferment leading to the rise of the Republican party. It ends with financial collapse, a peaking demand for railroad regulation, and the first break in the sway of the Republican Party. The Civil War, occurring in the midst of it, gives it the unity of a prewar, wartime, and postwar period.
